While we definitely have plenty of great things to do in the coastal region over the next few days (check out this week's "Weekender Blog" for all the details), one of the summer's biggest First State events is happening over the next few days just a short drive north in the state capital region.
Held for the seventh consecutive year on the grounds of Dover Downs International Speedway, the 2018 Firefly Festival is being headlined this year by rap superstar Eminem, as well as Lil Wayne, The Killers, the Arctic Monkeys and dozens of other acts over the four days of the event.
But the music is only part of what the Firefly Festival is really all about. In true Woodstock fashion (click the link if you're too young to get that reference), Firefly involves camping out, enjoying a good time with your friends and literally leaving behind all of the worries of everyday life for a few days of rock and roll and good times.
In all, more than 100 acts are scheduled to perform between Thursday, June 14, and Sunday, June 17, at "The Woodlands," a 105-acre space that falls under the purview of Dover Downs International Speedway.
Several internationally renowned performers have graced the Firefly stages (there are seven of them) over the years, none bigger than Sir Paul McCartney in 2015. Other notable acts have included the Red Hot Chili Peppers (2013), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (2013), the Foo Fighters (2014) and Bob Dylan (2017).
And in addition to four days of nonstop music, Firefly festival goers also have tons of on-site options to choose from, including "The Brewery," run by Southern Delaware's own Dogfish Head Brewery and featuring "Firefly Ale," created just for the annual festival.
Other on-site options include a coffee house, a market, a dance hall, food vendors and a place to take a break and relax in a hammock for awhile.
Firefly also offers various charging stations, where attendees can charge electronic devices when batteries are running a bit low.
