As we draw closer to Memorial Day Weekend here in the coastal region, outdoor happenings and events will continue increasing in both scope and frequency.
We have some of the area's biggest and best festivals coming up in the next several weeks, beginning with several fun events over the next few days.
Highlighted by the annual Coastal Delaware Running Festival, this third weekend of April is filled with fun happenings throughout the coastal region.
REMINDER: be sure to check out the interactive map at the end of this blog entry to learn more about this weekend's featured events.
Okay, let's take a look at this weekend's top events, beginning with...
Coastal Delaware Running Festival (April 20-22). For the first time in 2018, the most popular components of this fourth annual event will begin and end on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.
These include the 9 kilometer run, as well as both the half marathon and the full marathon.
Festivities begin on Friday, April 20, with an expo to be held at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, from 6 to 9 p.m. Participants for the weekend events can also pick up their race packets at this time.
There will be a 5K run held on Saturday, April 21, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Dewey Beach Lions Club facility on McKinley Street.
And Sunday is the main event of the weekend, with the 9K race, the half marathon and the featured full marathon all kicking off at staggered starting times in the morning. A finish line "grand celebration" is planned for Grotto Pizza on Rehoboth Avenue.
Even if you’re not participating in the event, consider finding a spot along the race route to cheer on the runners and maybe hand out a cup or two of much-needed water to the more than 2,500 expected participants.

This event is held over three days and includes a two-night stay at the cottages on the Indian River, as well as a full itinerary of lighthouse and maritime heritage tours and presentations.
One highlight of the event is a 19th century style surfman dinner that will be served inside the Indian River LIfe-Saving Station near the Indian River Inlet.
