As is often the case in the month of August, there are really no major events or festivals scheduled for the next few days here in the coastal region. We realize that everyone is trying to squeeze as many sun-filled days as possible out of the remainder of the summer season, as well you should.

But the coastal region's big "festival season" is clearly on the horizon, with major events coming up in all of the so-called "ber" months between September and December.

So be on the lookout for those, beginning with a jam-packed weekend after Labor Day, with the Nanticoke Indian Powwow, the Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival, the Riverwalk Freedom Festival and the Rehoboth Beach Sandcastle Contest all taking place during that busy weekend of Sept. 8-9.

But as for this coming weekend, we do have a few events and activities we'd like to highlight for you, as always, to help plan your days here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

Okay, let's jump right into things shall we? Here are our top five ideas for fun things to do this coming weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

First up is a newcomer on our list for 2018, which is...

Magee Farms Watermelon Festival (August 18). This first-time event will take place at Magee Farms in Lewes and is scheduled for this Saturday, August 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

More than 35 vendors will be on hand, including such local favorites as Rita's Italian Ice, Vanderwende Creamery, Hot Dogs on the Beach, Cupcake Couture, Pink Zebra and Ocean Organics.

Other planned activities include free games and activities, contests, raffles, music and, of course, plenty of watermelon.

A portion of t-shirt sales on Saturday will be donated to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

Visit the Magee Farms Facebook page for more information.

Delaware Bay Lighthouse Tours (August 18). Take advantage of this rare opportunity to get an up close and personal look at the two lighthouses that adorn the Delaware Breakwater, just off the coast of historic Lewes.

At both 1 and 2 p.m. this Saturday, August 18, the Delaware Bay Launch Service will be picking up tour patrons at the Lewes Ferry Terminal for this one-hour guided tour.

You'll cruise past the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse for photos, then continue on to the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse for a tour.

Military Bands at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand (August 17-18). Both the U.S. Navy Cruisers (August 17) and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors (August 18) will be performing this weekend at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.

Both shows begin at 8 p.m. and run for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Savor the Wish Fundraiser (August 18). Help support a great cause this Saturday evening as Nassau Valley Vineyards plays host to the 2018 "Savor the Wish" fundraiser to benefit Make-A-Wish Delaware.

The evening's festivities include food and drink tastings from several area restaurants, live music by local favorite "The Funsters," a silent auction and much more.

The event is scheduled to run from 7 to 11 p.m. Ticket prices are $60 and special "designated driver" tickets are available for $30.

Concert in Canalfront Park (August 16). Visit Canalfront Park in Lewes this Thursday evening, August 16, for a special summertime concert.

This week, the energetic and fun "Nate Myers & The Aces" will be performing, beginning at 7 p.m. and running for about two hours.

Movies on the Beach (August 20). Held every Monday night during the season, these family friendly movies are fun for everyone. Bring your family, a blanket, and some popcorn to the beach for family movie night!

Movies will start at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey Beach and Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach. This weekend, the featured showing in Bethany Beach is "Peter Rabbit" while Dewey Beach is showing "The BFG."

This is also the final movie on the beach scheduled for 2018 in Dewey Beach.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, we hope you have a fun and exciting few days here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

And be sure to check back here next week in our “Weekender Blog” for more great happenings in and near the coastal region.

Have a great weekend everyone!
