If you’re in the mood for some great basketball during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, look no further than Cape Henlopen High School.
The nationally renowned “Slam Dunk to the Beach” high school basketball returns in 2016 for yet another year of high octane hoops action right here in coastal Delaware.

The tournament this year features three days of some of the best high school basketball teams in Delaware, as well as invited teams from throughout North America.
Out-of-state teams this year include some of the nation’s best, including Maryland’s Bishop McNamara, Baltimore Poly and Eleanor Roosevelt. From New Jersey comes Patrick School, Roselle Catholic and St. Benedict’s, and from New York comes St. Raymond’s, Bishop Loughlin and Our Savior New American.
Schools from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, South Carolina and even one from Ontario, Canada, round out the field. The squad from St. Michael’s High School in Toronto is the first team from outside the United States to ever play in the prestigious holiday tournament.
Delaware teams include Smyrna, Mount Pleasant, Sanford and the host team – our very own Cape Henlopen High School Vikings.
In all, 20 teams will be competing in 2016, including 5 teams that are ranked in the nation’s top 25, including Patrick School (N.J.), Westtown (Pa.), Gray Collegiate (S.C.), St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.) and Neumann-Goretti (Pa.).
The Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament began in 1990 and has featured some of the best high school basketball players in the nation, many of whom went on to stellar collegiate and NBA careers.
Some of the best-known players who have played at Slam Dunk to the Beach include LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony.
